DR ALEXANDRA DUFFY, PSY.D.

 

Dr. Alexandra Hiatt Duffy earned her Doctoral Degree in Clinical Psychology from the George Washington University in Washington, DC. Dr. Duffy specializes in providing educational and psychological assessments for children, adolescents and adults. She has worked with students in public and private schools in Charlotte, Boston and Washington DC. She completed training counseling students for academic and emotional concerns at the George Washington University and Catholic University in Washington DC.

At Harvard University, Dr. Duffy completed an Advanced Post-Doctoral Fellowship. She provided counseling to undergraduate, graduate and law students to help them adjust to the university and overcome difficulties that may interfere with the definition and accomplishment of their educational, personal, and career goals. She also helped students identify and address academic issues of time management, procrastination, test anxiety, study skills, and attention difficulties.

Dr. Duffy has considerable experience in the treatment of eating disorders. As a Staff Psychologist at Georgetown University, she was an active member of the campus treatment team that monitored and supported students struggling with eating-related health issues. She also provided consultation to residence life, athletic teams and faculty.

Dr. Duffy also specializes in the treatment of serious emotional and behavioral problems in children and adolescents. She completed an APA accredited internship at an inpatient hospital in Modesto, California, specializing in intensive crisis stabilization and treatment of children and adolescents. She also worked as a Staff Psychologist at Casa Pacifica, a level five residential treatment center just outside of Los Angeles. She provided intensive, cognitive behavioral treatment to children and adolescents who were unable to be managed in their homes or in group home settings. Treatment included teaching children cognitive strategies and social skills to enable them to live effective and fulfilling lives at home and in the community. Family therapy and parent/sibling support groups were essential components of the treatment.

Dr. Duffy has two practice locations within Eastover Pediatrics and Charlotte Pediatric Clinic. She enjoys working with individuals of all ages. In her work with clients, she utilizes psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal, and play therapy techniques. She encourages her clients to address individual and interpersonal issues that can interfere with motivation, academic performance, well-being, or enjoyment of life. She provides admission testing for students applying to private schools, as well as testing for academically gifted programs and early-admission to kindergarten.

Dr. Duffy is active in the community providing training to many schools and organizations, including the Girls Scouts Hornets Nest Council. She has been a coach for Girls on the Run at Myers Park Traditional School. She has held leadership positions with the Junior League over the past eight years in Charlotte, Los Angeles and Boston. She is currently Chair of the Board of Directors of the Dilworth Child Development Center and is a member of the Teen Health Connection board of directors. She is currently completing a Post-Doctoral Masters Degree in Clinical Psychopharmacology through the California School of Professional Psychology.
